Newts and chipmunks (?)

Hiking on the mountain today the trails were bursting with those little orange newts who seem to freeze when I approach making we wonder if they ever move at all.

Are they newts? Salamanders? What's the difference - I'm not sure.

I also saw a little hole on the side of the summit trail. I noticed it because of all the feathers around it, then I noticed all the piles of pine cone bits. Finally I noticed a little bit of rounded bone like from a bird skull? I couldn't figure out what kind of animal would eat pine cones but also bring a bird back to it's hole - the hole wasn't that big . . . . what was it?

I wish I had the camera with but it was raining so I didn't bring it along this trip.
